Two interesting abstracts. 1. The first one is http://goo.gl/hL8jP Now, I still don’t have the mental ability to digest any of the info contained in this abstract, but I thought I would go ahead anyway and publish the link. I mean, rice bran and curcumin work together to kill myeloma cells??? Fantastico! Hey, pass the cereal!!! 😉 Okay, okay, it’s not that simple. This seems to be a special sort of rice bran, probably a concentrated form of something or other, not the regular stuff you might find inside a box at the supermarket…
2. I also came across a new curcumin analog: http://goo.gl/rUbRp Well, this certainly sounds promising. At first glance, anyway…
More research needed. But not today…
Health update. Stefano is much better but still has a cough. I don’t think he has a fever, though. As for me, today my fever seems to be hovering around 38° Celsius. I woke up early this morning with 38°, and it is 38.2° right now. That is a full degree less than it was on Sunday evening. I can walk around, up and down the stairs, etc…so, not bad, not bad…
However, I sometimes feel as though some big strong hairy monster has been fiercely pounding my back, mainly my shoulders. Uffa. I was so sore and achy this morning that I even brought out a bottle of Tylenol from the medicine cabinet and put it on my bed table…but so far I haven’t even licked one of the caplets… 😉
My cough. Hmmm. Now that’s another story. This morning I called our doctor and told him that the antibiotic I started on Saturday hasn’t really touched my cough yet. It should have made it much much better by now, he agreed. So he changed the prescription to something stronger. That should do it!
So, this is Day Four of what most certainly is the nuttiest experiment ever conducted by someone with smoldering myeloma. My nuttiest experiment, anyway…I do realize that.
I am definitely better, though. I am not sleeping all day, as I was last weekend…And even though I still don’t feel up to reading anything much, I have been watching lots of documentaries and food programs and movies and whatnot. Oh, by the way, Mr. Dog Whisperer is my newest best friend. How does he do it?! Great show (and, as you may know, we don’t even have a dog!). Stefano thinks there should be a Cat Whisperer show, too…Yeah, I agree. Now, why isn’t there one???? 😆
Last but certainly not least: Many thanks, everyone, for your kind wishes, public and private. All very much appreciated!!! Hmmm, I think Dog Whisperer might be on now…sooo…ciao! And please take care! 🙂
Margaret, glad to hear you are both recovering. I don’t know though – I can never drink coffee when I’m REALLY sick. So … are you sure you aren’t making some excuse to stay in bed with S?
I loved both articles. They sound so promising.
I did a bit of research on MGN-3 when I first got diagnosed. Here are excerpts from some of the info I had which may interest some readers (or not)
“MGN-3 is made from Rice Bran, enzymatically treated with polysaccharides from Shitake, Kawaratake, and Surehrotake mushrooms. MGN-3 was developed in a university research environment by Mamdooh H. Ghoneum, Ph.D., of Charles Drew University , Los Angeles.
In studies conducted by Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, taking up to 3000 milligrams of MGN3 daily increased the activity level of NK cells by as much as 300%… and at the same time boosted T and B cell counts.
On 16 July 2004 the FDA issued a permanent injunction against Lane Labs the most widely known MGN-3 distributor for making medical claims without performing the outrageously expensive FDA approved clinical trails. (Only patentable pharmaceutical drugs can pay for such studies, plant based medicines cannot.) This has caused some people to believe that MGN-3 is no longer available. This is not correct. MGN-3 is still available from the Japanese manufacturer Daiwa Pharmaceutical. They call their product BioBran MGN-3. It is identical to the Lane Labs MGN-3.”
In case anyone is interested.
the rice bran spoken of in the article (arabinoxylan) is available in several existing supplements. Here’s a link to some of the products that carry it:

Sorry to hear about the fever. This is the flu, isn’t it? My sister’s family is struggling with it too. I’ve been told that this year the flu makes you very weak…Until now I managed to escape it. Don’t know if because of the vaccine…Yes I know… but in the end I did it. Get well soon!!!

Hi again 🙂
Hang on Margaret, don’t give it up! Your body WILL definitely do all the work instead of toxic chemicals, I’m 100% sure. And it will do you well generally.
This thing IS nasty, I know – my whole family had it, I was ill the first day and the whole first week of this year! How about that start?!! 🙂 And my 2 years old son and his mum even spent few days at the hospital because of some complications… But he’s better now, still coughing occasionally though.
Hey, thanks for your info, HannaO! We have this BioBran in our country, but I’ve never realized it’s Japanese. You see – in Slovene language “bran” means something like “protect”, so I was sure it has to deal something with immune-burst plants or even some sort of artificial substitute and it is a domestic product. Now I’m more interested in it, especially ’cause it was recommended to me in several occasions, but I never took time to check it out…
Good luck to everyone, especially to you Margaret!
Oh, and Margaret, don’t forget to drink A LOOOOT of water!
😉
I hope it goes better with your health.
Interesting post about Arabinox and Curcuma. Arabinox was the first thing I discovered when I heard that I had MM. I found no evidence based on research, only commercially. That is why your post is so interesting.
Another problem is that curcumma is becoming very expensive (commodity prices have become much higher).
Question is whether we can reduce the daily amount of turmeric example by combining it with something else?
Margaret, very interesting, the synergy between turmeric and D3
Scientists Identify Cooperative Effects of Vitamin D and Active Chemical in Curry that Stimulates the Immune System to Clear Amyloid Plaques in Alzheimer’s Disease
(http://www.hbri.org/NewsandEvents.htm)
A part of the text:
San Diego, Calif. (July 13, 2009) – Human BioMolecular Research Institute (HBRI), a leading
non-profit research institute, announced today that in a study conducted jointly with UCLA and
UC Riverside, and published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, a
potentially new approach to treating Alzheimer’s disease was discovered. Previous findings link
immune system defects to the accumulation of amyloid-beta, a peptide that forms plaques found
in Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin, an active ingredient found in the spice turmeric (yellow
curry), was found to help boost the immune system in clearing amyloid-beta. Turmeric is often
used in curry dishes among human populations associated with lower rates of Alzheimer’s
disease. Until recently, the mode of action of curcumins in stimulating immune cells was
unknown; however the current research indicates a likely interaction between curcumin
compounds and the cellular receptor for vitamin D3.

Here I am again :).
There is also a synthetic version of turmeric. Did you read about it? It’s called Diphenyl difluoroketone (EF24). Here a (complex for me to read) article:
